Ever wonder how many calories you should eat for your lean body mass, or something so simple as to where to start when you’re making changes to your DFI (daily food intake)? Maybe you’ve been exercising for a while, and you’re starting to question your progress when your weight doesn’t appear to be changing? Yeah, I know… it can feel difficult, time-consuming, and often overwhelming.

What about when you’re training as a professional athlete for a sport, and you really need to fine-tune your macros, or figure out your body fat percentage? Unfortunately many of us experience those same obstacles in which we often spend countless months, maybe even years, going off of “guess-timated” values that are so far off the track of where we really need to be. Investing lots of time and resources into action plans that truly aren’t benefiting us as much as they could.

Normally what one would do is get a body composition test done for their self so that they could have a baseline of numbers to go off of. As with many things, there are a different number of methods that yield different levels of accuracy. Not all of them are dependable, and the methods that are, are often reserved for colleges, only available with medical prescriptions, or only available at specialized fitness/wellness facilities.

Thankfully, that’s not the case with all dependable methods—I’m speaking of the InBody devices. The InBody, a relatively “new” method for testing body composition, has been increasing in popularity over the years. Mostly because of it’s accuracy, amount of personal data, and how long it takes for results. Depending on the model used, results can be given anywhere from 15s – 60s. It’s on the same reliability level as that of a DEXA scan, and… there’s no discomfort, no pinching, no dunking. And unlike DEXA scans where most places won’t allow you to test again for at least 6 months due to radiation from the X-rays, you can get tested as often as you’d like with the InBody. It’s recommended though to test every 2-4 weeks so that significant progress can be seen from any changes to your lifestyle and/or exercises.

To measure body composition, the InBody uses a technology called Direct Segmental Multi-frequency Bio-electrical Impedance Analysis (DSM-BIA). Unlike traditional BIA devices like home scales or hand-held devices that measure just the lower portion or just the upper portion of your body, the InBody measures all four limbs and the core/trunk. Plus, instead of sending only one small electric current to measure your body mass, it sends multiple currents and at different frequencies. Hence the term, direct segmental multi-frequency. Thus providing a far more accurate measurement of your total body. The amount of detail that’s provided because of this is extremely valuable. You’ll find out things like your, total body water, body fat percentage and mass, intra/extracellular water ratio, visceral fat level, skeletal muscle mass, segmental lean analysis, and more. And again, results are very quick with no discomfort throughout the test.

Each test performed will only take up to 45secs, but we’ll spend a brief amount of time (20-30mins) discussing your results, and determining where to go from there depending on your goals/progress.
